How many local businesses have you tried? Our staff have started a mission to visit as many of THEMUSEUM’s neighbors as we can! After all, local businesses are the ones helping to spread the #DTKlove and make the core #DTKawesome, right? This week, we visited our neighbours on Ontario Street – Black Arrow Cycles, Candy Candy Candy, and Styl Frugal – to see how you can shop local for the holidays. Previously in this series: Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin Treats, Level Up at The Adventurer's Guild, Cinematic Adventures at the Apollo Cinema and Shop Local at Legacy Greens.
Shopping local in Kitchener’s downtown core is easy, especially on Ontario Street (or, as some locals call it, Funtario Street). There are three independently owned businesses right beside each other that are full of great gift ideas and potential stocking stuffers.
Black Arrow Cycles
Who doesn’t want to wake up to a brand new bicycle on Christmas Day? Black Arrow Cycles can definitely help hook you up with this classic gift for the holidays. They sell bikes for children and adults, and can even customize parts for you. If you’re looking for a smaller gift, they also sell numerous accessories, such as helmets, bells, and new seats, that can be used to deck out any ride.
Candy Candy Candy (I can’t let you go)
Need some last minute stocking stuffers? Know someone with a sweet tooth? Candy Candy Candy has got you covered! Their walls are lined with classic treats that will leave your mouth watering. If you’re looking for something new or different, they’ve got that too: from chicken and waffle salt water taffy to bah-humbug candy canes, there’s something for everyone. Looking for something specific that’s not on the shelves? The owner will make every possible effort to order it in! They also sell a variety of board games and nerdy glassware, so you might just leave with more than you were looking for.
Styl Frugal is the place to go if you’re looking for a stylish item for a friend or a cute holiday outfit for yourself. Yes, it’s a consignment store, but why should that matter? The owner only collects gently worn items that are currently “in” so the racks don’t look any different than what you would find in a small boutique. The only real difference is that there’s only one of everything, and it might not be in your size. From cute dresses and tops to pants, shoes, boots and bags, you’ll find more items you’ll want to add to your own closet than you thought was possible.
