Underground Studio Expert (Circuitry & Soldering)

Report to: Brent Wettlaufer, Underground Studio Coordinator

Description of the Position: Preparing for The Underground Studio's launch in November 2016, THEMUSEUM is looking for interested candidates to aid with new STEAM-based programming streams being offered at THEMUSEUM. Underground Studio Experts will assist in the preparation, implementation, and facilitation of STEAM-based programs delivered by Underground Studio staff specific to their program stream of interest. Reporting to the Underground Studio Coordinator, they will be responsible for enforcing health and safety procedures, along with cultivating lasting interest in ideas generated within the space. The Underground Studio Inventor may also be called on to innovate on their program stream of interest and to explore cross-stream programming opportunities in conjunction with the Underground Studio Coordinator and the Maker-in-Residence. 

Time Commitment: One to two 4-hour shifts monthly. 9am-1pm or 12pm-4pm. 4-8 hours per month + Periodic Training.

Duties/Responsibilities:

-       Assist the Underground Studio Coordinator with preparing space for visitor use.

-       Administrate activity components and ensure that tasks are being performed safely.

-       Communicate with audiences and foster an open, collaborative environment.

-       Assist with cleaning up the Underground Studio space at the end of the program.

-       Demonstrate sound soldering principles to audiences.

Skills/Qualifications:

-       Intermediate electronics skills, including knowledge of both analog and digital electronics systems.

-       Demonstrated experience with soldering, desoldering, wiring, and the proper maintenance of electronic equipment.

-       An educational or professional background in the Science, Technology, Arts, or Engineering sector.

-       Experience working with children or a willingness to learn how to work with children.

-       A demonstrated interest in Maker culture.

-       Good oral communication skills.

-       A willingness to learn new and emerging technologies.

-       First Aid certification an asset.

Training:

-       Safe operating procedures for equipment in The Underground Studio.

-       Technical communication of information to audiences.

-       Ongoing exposure to new methodologies in making.

-       Basic use of various tools, including, but not limited to: soldering iron, scroll saw, hammers, screwdrivers, 3D printer, hot glue gun, dremel tool, power drill, chisel and rasp, measurement devices, and others.

-       Basic use of various software programs, including, but not limited to: Tinkercad, Scratch, Arduino IDE, Alice, GIMP, Inkscape, Cubicreator, qucs, 123D suite, and others.
