AltCon2018 Inspires Thought, Social Change & Leadership

New Conference Gathers the Best and Brightest in Arts and Culture

Over 60 people from three provinces gathered for the first Alternative Conference for Emerging Arts & Culture Professionals (#AltCon2018). Hosted by THEMUSEUM in downtown Kitchener, like-minded individuals had the opportunity to listen, learn, network – and ask important and uncomfortable questions.

“It was truly wonderful to see so many emerging professionals share their passion and excitement for the future of arts and culture,” said THEMUSEUM CEO, David Marskell. “Some of the brightest minds in our industry discussed what our role is – or should be – when responding to political and social movements.”

The conference featured two well-known keynote speakers: BlackBerry brand architect Paul Kalbfleisch and author, journalist and marketing expert Mike Tennant. Notable speakers included CBC KW morning show host Craig Norris, Stephanie Deschenes, the Executive Director for the Canadian Association of Science Centres, and Melissa Durrell, President of Durrell Communications in Uptown Waterloo. Breakout sessions focused on leadership development, membership engagement, data-driven marketing solutions and diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

“AltCon really was an amazing experience,” said Museums of Burlington Museums’ Curatorial Assistant, Sarah Silvestri. This conference went well beyond networking and lectures; I left feeling energized and motivated.”

AltCon was generously sponsored by RBC Future launch, an initiative investing in helping young people gain access and opportunity to the skills, job experience and career networks needed for the future world of work.

THEMUSEUM is currently accepting speaker and session suggestions for AltCon2019 on February 24, 25 and 26, 2019.
