Quantum Through Pop Culture

Dr. John Donohue, Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo

In pop culture, “quantum physics” is often used to indicate something mysterious and frighteningly complicated, or as a magical theory that allows us to explain away all sorts of fantastical technologies. In reality, quantum science is a well-established field that has produced many real-world technologies used all around the world. In this talk, we’ll examine quantum in science fiction, exploring their interpretations and diving into what the science says. We’ll consider how quantum is used modern quantum technologies, learn how to avoid quantum snake oil, and discover some of the revolutionary future technologies that quantum science enables.

John Donohue is the head of Scientific Outreach at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. He obtained his PhD in Physics from the University of Waterloo with a research speciality in quantum optics, ultrafast laser physics, and entanglement.

Included in general admission.
