As part of Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius, the da Vinci Dialogues invites audiences to explore the rich history, art, and ideas of the Renaissance through engaging talks by leading scholars.
The Story of the Da Vinci Bridge in Waterloo’s Hydrocut Mountain Bike Trail System (A Bridge with a Story: The da Vinci Bridge at the Hydrocut)
In this presentation, members of the Hydrocut Trail Team explore how a remarkable engineering concept sketched by Leonardo da Vinci more than 500 years ago found new life in one of Waterloo Region’s most beloved mountain biking destinations.
Attendees will discover the story behind the Hydrocut’s Da Vinci Bridge, a self-supporting wooden structure inspired by Leonardo’s original design and adapted to span a creek within the community forest. Through the bridge’s development, the presentation highlights how Renaissance ingenuity continues to influence modern engineering and outdoor recreation.
Driven by the Waterloo Cycling Club (WCC) and its mission to foster fun, accessible, and inclusive mountain biking, the project became a true community collaboration. Learn how volunteer trail builders, licensed Professional Engineers (P.Engs), and local business partners worked together through the Hydrocut Trail Committee to transform a centuries-old concept into a durable piece of trail infrastructure enjoyed by thousands of riders each year.
Presented in conjunction with Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius, this talk complements the immersive exhibition by demonstrating how Leonardo’s ideas continue to inspire innovation far beyond the museum. From Renaissance sketchbook to forest trail, discover how timeless engineering, community stewardship, and creative problem-solving brought a 500 year old design to life.
Admission to this event includes admission to THEMUSEUM.
