Celebrating Identity

October 4, 2017 – October 31, 2017

The Coalition of Muslim Women of KW (CMW) and THEMUSEUM are very pleased to announce the second annual Muslim women art exhibition, Celebrating Identity, as part of Canada / Ontario 150 celebrations.

This is the second annual exhibition showcasing the artistic work of immigrant Muslim women artists, with a particular focus on engaging young women. The theme of the exhibition is the celebration of the beautiful-yet-complex, multi-layered identities that often exist in first-generation immigrants with a focus on what it means to be a Canadian and Ontarian for these newcomers. October is Women’s History Month in Canada and is proclaimed as Islamic History Month by Canadian Parliament and Islamic Heritage Month by the Parliament of Ontario.

Funded by the Government of Ontario, “Celebrating Identity” will be a month long art exhibition running from October 4 – October 31, 2017 at THEMUSEUM. The Official Launch of the exhibition will take place on Saturday, October 7th from 1 – 3 p.m. at THEMUSEUM. “Celebrating Identity” is FREE to view on the day of the launch only. On other exhibition days, there will be regular admission fee.

Celebrating Identity draws attention to the capability and artistic talents of newcomer Muslim women artists, further connecting them to the community. CMW is led by a group of passionate women based in Kitchener-Waterloo who believe that by working together, we can create a just and harmonious community in which Muslim women are valued and admired for who they are and provided the training and opportunities needed to engage as leaders both within the Muslim community and beyond.
