Friends of THEMUSEUM: Mike Farwell

Community members are a very important aspect of THEMUSEUM. Our staff and volunteers interact with members of the Kitchener-Waterloo community on a daily basis, and do their absolute best to ensure they are always entertained, inspired and enlightened. Mike Farwell, who works for KW’s 570News, is one of our frequent visitors, but he also collaborates with us for some of his own events, including fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis. Since he keeps returning for exhibitions, programs, and events, we asked what it is about our space that always pulls him back in.

How did you initially become involved with THEMUSEUM?

I first got involved with THEMUSEUM as a guest. It was a great place to spend a weekend afternoon with my son and, ever since, I’ve been hooked! I love the way THEMUSEUM has evolved and how it always has something interesting going on.

What is your favourite community event?

My favourite community event has been the Beer Series because, well, beer! If people know there’s beer there, is that not reason enough to attend? On a slightly more serious note, the series can lure you with the beer but keep you for the new skills you’ll learn along the way. Plus, I think it’s a great partnership with another downtown business.

What has been your favourite, or most memorable, exhibition, and why?

My favourite exhibition was the Warhol exhibition because of its combination of art and pop culture. It was SO well done and I loved having access to Warhol’s work right here in our community. I left that exhibit with a canvas bag that had a print of Marilyn Monroe on it and when I was shopping, the clerk at the grocery store liked the bag so much I gave it to her!

Would you recommend our space to families?

Yes! While THEMUSEUM has dropped its “Children’s Museum” moniker there’s still lots to entertain the young’uns. Every time I visit, I see kids enjoying the water activity and pin board on the second floor. Furthermore, I’m a big believer in mixing culture into our children’s lives and THEMUSEUM is a welcoming, fun environment to do that.

What three words would you use to describe THEMUSEUM?

Funky. Creative. Original.
