AltCon Empowers Emerging Arts & Culture Professionals

Sessions led by thought leaders across the country

The first Alternative Conference for Emerging Arts & Culture Professionals (#AltCon2018) will be held at THEMUSEUM February 25-27, 2018. AltCon was created by 10 emerging professionals from across Canada and aims to provide stimulating thought leadership, personal growth opportunities and the chance to network with industry leaders.

“As a Board Member of the Canadian Museums Association for the past three years, I’ve noticed a lack of opportunity for young professionals being able to attend relevant, accessible conferences,” said David Marskell, CEO, THEMUSEUM. “The Alternative Conference brings together some of the brightest minds emerging in our industry.”

Notable speakers include CBC KW morning show host Craig Norris and Stephanie Deschenes,   the Executive Director for the Canadian Association of Science Centres. The keynote address will be given by former BlackBerry brand architect Paul Kalbfleisch.

“We are in a time that is challenging our definitions of culture and community. The instigators of change include technology, social discontent and the realization of a finite world,” said Kalbfleisch. “We are facing a new frontier that doesn’t have wide open spaces. We are facing the frontier within.”

Sessions will focus on brand building, diversity and inclusion in the workforce, data-driven decision making and investing in the leaders of tomorrow. A panel discussion will explore the role of cultural organizations and how they should respond to political and social movements.
