THEMUSEUM Seeks Partners to Shine a Light on Local Rock and Roll

REVERBERATIONS | Our Rock & Soul Legacy will celebrate the rich musical history of Waterloo Region

Kitchener, ON | January 21, 2021 — THEMUSEUM is thrilled to announce it will once again be partnering with renowned curator Virginia Eichhorn to present an exhibition on the local history of rock and roll within Waterloo Region. REVERBERATIONS | Our Rock & Soul Legacy, will open offsite from THEMUSEUM in the fall of 2021 at the same time that The Rolling Stones | UNZIPPED will be making its Canadian debut in Waterloo Region.

Inspired by and formulated as a response to local reporter Joel Rubinoff’s article written for the Waterloo Region Record last fall, ‘Gimme an R!’ – how about a rock exhibit that taps into Waterloo Region’s rich history?, REVERBERATIONS will offer an inside look into the region’s robust musical history that contributed to its spotlight on Canada’s cultural map.

“This community has such a rich history of music, from its unique venues, to Mel Brown and Helix and award-winning musicians, to national and international events,” said David Marskell, CEO of THEMUSEUM. “Since moving here I’ve seen amazing local bands and heard the stories of Roger Miller penning Trailer for Sale or Rent and the Guess Who first creating the opening riff to American Woman both topping charts in Canada, the UK, and the USA. It’s time to celebrate and shine a spotlight on our musical roots.”

Part of what will make this exhibition unique is the storytelling aspect of the exhibit. Mike Tennant, writer and former producer/co-writer of the CBC Radio hit series The Age of Persuasion, will work with Virginia to interview local community members. These stories will help shape the content of the exhibition.

THEMUSEUM hopes to crowdsource artefacts, stories and is also calling on sponsors and donors to step forward and help raise funds to make the exhibition happen and at a reasonable cost to visitors.

With UNZIPPED set to bring thousands of visitors to the community in November 2021, THEMUSEUM hopes to introduce them to more than The Rolling Stones exhibition and encourages guests to extend their stays overnight. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community and will play a significant role in helping to reboot the local economy after COVID-19,” said Marskell. “We need the community and local corporations to step up and donate to make this a wonderful success and possibly a permanent exhibition!”

Virginia Eichhorn has previously curated the exhibition, Talkin’ Bout My Generation | How Youth Revolution and Music Change the World, held at THEMUSEUM in 2009 in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. Recently, Virginia curated AFTERLIFE | The Seance Experience Featuring the Ghost of Thomas Lacey that received an honorable mention from the Ontario Museums Association Awards of Excellence for Exhibitions.

Anyone wishing to participate, sponsor, donate, loan historical accounts, mementos, artefacts, or knowledge, should please respond to KWRocks@THEMUSEUM.ca.
