Indigenous Immersive Art Experience Coming to Waterloo Region

THEMUSEUM partners with Artist Collective Quantum Wampum

KITCHENER, ON | June 21, 2023 — On National Indigenous People’s Day, THEMUSEUM is excited to announce a new project partnership to create content for EYEPOOL with Quantum Wampum, an indigenous artist collective out of Ontario.

It is a first-of-its-kind Indigenous immersive art experience for Waterloo Region and South Western Ontario.

The project, led by James Monkman (Cree) and Brian T. Moore (Settler), aims to understand our connections to each other and the universe through digital art. The theme for this piece is Iynisiwin, a Cree word meaning wisdom, intelligence, and knowledge.

“As a major hub for technological innovation – including artificial intelligence – Waterloo Region is unique in its ability to shape future technologies. As such, we are really excited to share a unique perspective on what can shape these technologies. By looking at the interconnected intelligence of our relatives around us perhaps we can create a more empathetically hopeful future. One that strives to understand all of our relations and work towards a more relational and sustainable future” said James Monkman and Brian T. Moore.

EYEPOOL is THEMUSEUM’s newest permanent digital gallery created as a legacy for THEMUSEUM’s 20th anniversary year. EYEPOOL is equipped with 14 state-of-the-art Christie Digital Inspire Projectors along with audio, visual, and other interactive technology to immerse the guest from floor to ceiling.

“EYEPOOL, has quickly become the number one attraction for people visiting THEMUSEUM”, said David Marskell, CEO of THEMUSEUM… “We’re excited to partner with Quantum Wampum for this important initiative and share it with our guests, students and tourists as we grow our digital collection.”

More details on the installation will soon be available, with the experience slated to open on September 30, 2023, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
